This report shows the historical population counts in Vermont between the years 1840 and 2010 by geography and year.

Every ten years, census population counts are used to reapportion the seats in the House of Representatives among the states and then to draw legislative districts in the states. The number of electors each state receives for presidential elections is the number in its congressional delegation (number of representatives in the House and Senate). It is also used to direct the distribution of federal funds.

At the state and local level, the census provides critical data for decision making on such matters as education, employment, veterans’ services, public health care, rural development, the environment, transportation, and housing. It helps communities understand how they are changing. 

Existing decennial census counts were utilized in the creation of this report.

Decennial census counts are theoretically full counts of the population (not estimates) and therefore have few data limitations. However, it is not possible to conduct a truly complete count of the population, so there is some small amount of measurement error associated with these counts.
