How to Use the Site

Data in vermont Insights are grouped into two primary domains: reports and Community Data Profiles. Reports, which typically focus on a single key measure like population counts or early prenatal care, are organized by topic in Vermont Insights. They contain features that allow you to filter and customize chart, table, and map displays as well as narratives describing the data and findings. Community Data Profiles are made up of a collection of measures and displays from reports on Vermont Insights. They provide snapshots of trends across many report topics using data from Vermont's children, families, and communities. You can find data in Vermont Insights in four ways:

Option 1: Search

  1. The  homepage and Explore pages on Vermont Insights contain a search bar (located at the top of the page or below the banner image) to assist users in finding content.  Enter your search term or keywords (e.g. "early prenatal care", "population", "Head Start" etc.) into the search box and press your keyboard's enter key or click the magnifying glass icon.
  2. In the returned search results, click on the title of the page you wish to view. If no results are shown, try a different search term or contact the Vermont Insights team.
    • Reports contain features that allow you to filter and customize chart, table and map displays under separate tabs. Additional tabs contain information describing the data and findings.
    • Community Data Profiles highlight chart, table or map displays from reports for specific communities during a predefined period. Displays can't be customized, but links to reports within the Community Data Profiles allow for such customization at the report level.

Option 2: Navigation Bar

  1. All pages on Vermont Insights contain a navigation bar (located at the top of the page) to assist users in finding content.  Click the "Report Topics" menu option in the navigation bar and select a topic of interest. If you would like to view a Community Data Profile, click the "Profiles" menu option and make your selection.
  2. On the resulting Explore page, you'll see a list of returned reports or Community Data Profiles (located in the Results panel). The filtered results are based on the menu option selected in the navigation bar. You can change any filter options using the left panel as well as enter a search to search the entire site - regardless of the filter options selected. Click on the title of the page in the Results panel you wish to view.

    • Community Data Profiles highlight chart, table or map displays from reports for specific communities during a predefined period. Displays can't be customized, but links to reports within the Community Data Profiles allow for such customization at the report level.

Option 3: Homepage Sections

  1. On the Vermont Insights homepage, locate the Report Topics section and click on the icon for the topic of interest. For Community Data Profiles, find the Community Data Profiles section on the homepage and click the "view" button for the profile(s) you wish to see.
  2. On the resulting Explore page, you'll see a list of returned reports or Community Data Profiles (located in the Results panel). The filtered results are based on the option selected on the homepage. You can change the topic or Community Data Profile filters using the left panel or enter a search. Click on the title of the page in the Results panel you wish to view.

Option 4: Returning Users Only - "Recently Viewed" Homepage Section

  1. If you are a returning user of Vermont Insights, you can find links on the homepage to content you previously viewed. Between the homepage's banner and search bar, a section called "Welcome Back! Click here to see the pages you recently viewed." should appear. Click this section. NOTE: This section will not be visible to: 1) first time users of Vermont Insights; 2) those who have cleared their internet browser's cookies and; 3) users who do not have cookies enabled in their internet browser.
  2. Beneath the section title, a list of pages should appear. Click on the page titles to reaccess the content.
